There is something magical about the streets of Italy. Italian street food is world famous, and even the most discerning diners acknowledge that to really experience that perfect stuzzichini or pasta, there is no better place to turn than those small roadside cafés and stalls where the true Italian flavours originate.
Vicolo brings the experience of Italian street food to the UAE. With focus on authentic regional recipes and a detailed, rustic setting, Vicolo, which literally means ‘‘a narrow city street’’, will serve to recreate the bustling, lively, social culture of Italian street dining.
Even though the restaurant was packed busy with people lunching, the friendly staff took orders perfectly and quickly and made no errors. We were not only served efficiently but our orders came through super fast! And you can see that everything is being made fresh because they have an open kitchen wherein you can see right though. Not even a glass window! Considering they are in an area with clientele who are on the go and super busy, this one point made a very positive impact on us! Here is the friendly and super sweet chef who cooked us an amazing meal!
The complimentary bread which was fresh and I loved the cute jars which came along with it holding olive oil and vinegar. Our order number came on a spatula which was cute!
French Fries which came in a shovel 🙂 – Thing, long decent fries that are good to munch on even if you are super full.
Bruschetta – Charcoaled bread came in a pot with freshly chopped tomato, oregano and olive oil in a bowl on the side so you could top your bread with as many tomatoes as you liked. The mix was delish and the fact that the quantity of tomatoes to top on the bread was for you to decide worked very well.
Burratina – Fresh mozzarella filled with creamy stracciatella served with marinated bread in tomato juice. The burrata was good and creamy and the tomato bread base was mashed and unique. It made for a very different combination and takes getting some used to.
Alfredo Spaghetti Pasta – One of the best i have had in a long time, this simple and classic pasta with parmesan and cream was no fuss and SO GOOD! I loved how classic it was and the pasta was cooked to perfection. The sauce was flavourful and a delight to the tastebuds.
Vegetariano – Grilled Sandwich with eggplant, capsicum, onion, tomato, scamorza cheese, rocket leaves. This is one heavy sandwich! It is a meal in itself and is full of fresh goodness. Quite healthy too and quite flavourful. The olive bread it came in went very well with it.
Watermelon Mojito – Watermelon, mint and lime. Was refreshing and I loved the bright red color of the drink. Check out that bicycle hanging from the ceiling behind my drink!
Tiramisu – Non fuss and simple, this deliciousness came in a jar and was addictive. I think my friend and I fought for the last bite 🙂 It was moist and very street Italian.
Nutella Crepe – I just wished there was more Nutella in this well done crepe. It was good for those who are conscious but for people like me it was too little Nutella 🙂
I loved the buzz of this place and their outdoor dining area and the buzz around it. Their decor will remind you of European streets and the wall with quirky quotes will definitely bring a smile to your face.
Vicolo’s menu will be an ode to those secret Italian street recipes that were passed down through generations with a modern twist to truly tantalize the tastebuds.
